The Shire of Murray’s leadership in economic development has been recognised nationally, with CEO Dean Unsworth named the winner of this year’s Peter Chaffey Economic Development Australia Leadership Award.

The accolade was awarded at Economic Development Australia’s (EDA) Awards for Excellence Gala last night in Hobart. The Awards are the only national program dedicated to recognising innovation and exceptional achievements in economic development.

The Peter Chaffey award recognises outstanding leadership and contribution to the economic development profession, including driving innovation, change and positive outcomes for communities. Receiving this recognition demonstrates Mr Unsworth’s significant contribution to economic development and investment in the Murray region.

Shire of Murray President, Mr Douglas McLarty said that Dean’s leadership has transformed the way the Shire of Murray approaches regional development, creating a bold, forward-thinking and high-performing organisation.

“Under Dean’s leadership, the Shire has secured significant government investment since 2016 and delivered projects with national and international recognition. Just as importantly, he has invested in our people, building a strong culture of leadership, accountability and continuous improvement,” said Mr McLarty.

“Dean is a strategic thinker, an exceptional advocate and a values-led leader who remains deeply connected to our community. This award is a wonderful recognition of his contribution to Murray, the Peel Region and the broader economic development profession.”

A few examples of economic outcomes under Dean’s leadership include the national award winning and acclaimed Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia (FIPWA), which supports agri-tech and foodbased enterprises; the award-winning revitalisation of Dwellingup as a premier tourism

destination; and the restoration of the historic Exchange Hotel in Pinjarra. These projects not

only stimulate the local economy but also celebrate the identity and heritage of the region.

Mr Unsworth said he was humbled by receiving the award, and recognised the work of the broader Shire team, Councillors, the community and businesses in working together to build Murray’s economic future.

“It’s a great honour to receive this award, but it really reflects the collective work happening across the Shire of Murray,” Mr Unsworth said.

“There is enormous potential in this region, and our focus is on creating the conditions for businesses to grow, attracting new investment and making sure Murray is well positioned for the opportunities ahead.”
