Preservation and revitalisation of the Pinjarra Railway Precinct as a significant heritage and tourism destination, protecting irreplaceable railway assets while creating new opportunities for heritage tourism, economic development and community activation.

Overview

The Pinjarra Railway Yards (State Register Place No. 03097) are of exceptional cultural heritage significance and contain some of the WA’s oldest surviving railway infrastructure.

Established in 1893, the precinct includes the engine shed (believed to be the oldest remaining in WA) along with the carriage shed, goods shed and barracks. Together, these structures represent rare surviving examples of early railway infrastructure and provide important insight into the operational and social history of the State’s rail network.

Without urgent conservation works, deterioration of these heritage assets will continue to accelerate, placing structures of state significance at risk.

To safeguard the precinct, the Shire proposes heritage conservation works. These works will stabilise buildings, address structural issues, remove hazardous materials and prevent further deterioration while maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the site.

Completing this essential first stage will ensure the precinct is structurally stable, safe and protected for future generations, while laying the foundation for broader investment, activation and adaptive reuse opportunities.
