Upgrades to the Sir Ross McLarty Sports Precinct will continue this year with the tender for the McLarty Sports Pavilion awarded to AE Hoskins Building Services.
This project will replace the George Beacham Pavilion to provide gender neutral changerooms, inclusive of toilet and shower facilities.
Since 2021, the Shire of Murray has delivered staged improvements to the Precinct under its Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Plan, establishing the precinct as a thriving regional centre for sport, inclusion, and community connection.
Already home to the Pinjarra Football, Cricket and Hockey Clubs, with the Pinjarra Bowling and Recreation Club next door, the precinct has become the sporting heart of the Murray region.
In 2024, the $3.8 million Lovegrove Sports Pavilion opened, providing a modern clubhouse, an expanded oval, and upgraded parking. This development enabled the Pinjarra Hockey Club to relocate into town, further solidifying the precinct’s role as a multi-sport hub.
Upgrading the existing lighting at the Premier AFL Oval to LED in 2024 to create improved sporting experiences with lighting that meets current sporting standards, is energy efficient and requires less maintenance enhancing the safety and access for the local AFL sporting teams.
The next steps for the precinct include cricket infrastructure improvements, including three bay practice nets, five block turf wicket and a synthetic wicket, which will allow the local cricket and hockey teams to better utilise the ovals.
Shire President Douglas McLarty said, the Shire of Murray Council Plan sets five priority aspirations: one of these being ‘People’. This means the Shire is working to deliver outcomes that enable an active and healthy community. The ongoing improvement of this sports precinct supports this aspiration.
“Our investment in sport is not just about infrastructure,” said President McLarty.
“It’s about bringing people together, encouraging participation, and strengthening local identity. Well-designed, accessible sports facilities support the wellbeing of our community and provide a foundation for long-term community growth.”
Around $2.06 million in support has been provided by the Australian Government's Thriving Suburbs Program, administered by Main Roads WA.
Since 2021, upgrades at the Sir Ross McLarty Precinct upgrades have been funded by the Australian Government, State Government, Lotterywest, Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund, Alcoa, Cricket Australia and the Shire of Murray.
