Local businesses, community members and tourism stakeholders took to the trails this week as part of the Trail Town Discovery Day in Dwellingup, gaining first-hand insight into what it takes to deliver a great trail visitor experience.
Delivered by Trails WA and the Shire of Murray with support from the WA Government, the event brought participants onto ‘The Mack’ trail for a guided, beginner-friendly ride, with a series of trail-side conversations exploring how trails connect people to place, community and local businesses.
Participants heard from Traditional Owner - Maitland Hill, DBCA Officer - Eleanor Litterick and local rider Courtney Ryland, each sharing perspectives on caring for Country, trail management and the visitor experience. The ride was followed by a practical workshop focused on how local businesses can better support trail users and leverage opportunities as part of a trail-friendly destination.
Trails WA CEO, Agata Sleeman said the event highlighted the important role local businesses play in shaping the overall visitor experience.
“Trails are often the reason people come to Dwellingup, but it’s what happens beyond the trail that keeps them here longer and encourages them to return.”
“Dwellingup was the ideal setting for the Trails Town Discovery Day, with its extensive 125-kilometre network of adventure trails and the state-of-the-art Trails and Visitor Information Centre showcasing exactly why the Shire has become a premier destination for trail-based tourism and outdoor adventure in Western Australia,” said Shire of Murray CEO Dean Unsworth.
Participant, Megan Warren from the Forest Discovery Centre said the event offered her a stronger insight into what it means to be part of a trail town.
“Seeing our local trails through a visitor’s eyes was incredibly valuable. It’s about sharing what we know and working together to create a better experience for everyone.”
The event forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Dwellingup’s position as a leading WA Trail Town, supporting local economic development while promoting sustainable and enjoyable trail use.
