The Shire of Murray Pinjarra Planning Framework was endorsed by Council at last week’s Council meeting.
The endorsement follows an extensive consultation period that allowed hundreds of Murray residents and visitors to have their say on the future of Pinjarra.
The Framework explores how Pinjarra can grow thoughtfully to reach its fullest potential. The survey highlighted overwhelming support from residents and visitors alike that the Shire’s vision for Pinjarra supports the community’s aspirations.
Shire President Douglas McLarty said as the Peel Region’s secondary centre, Pinjarra plays a vital role in shaping the future of the region. With a steadily growing population, a distinctive natural environment and an increasingly diverse economy, the town stands at a pivotal point presenting both exciting opportunities and complex challenges for local businesses and the wider community.
“Our much-loved town is experiencing significant growth, and with that comes the responsibility to plan carefully and thoughtfully. It’s essential that we protect the unique qualities that define Pinjarra, its rich history, strong sense of identity and character while embracing development that enhances and reflects the essence of the town,” said President McLarty
Pinjarra is a special place where for generations, people have lived, worked and visited. Cradled by the Murray River, Pinjarra is an idyllic town with a rich heritage and abundance of country charm.
As the town grows, a robust Planning Framework is critical to ensure development respects its history and aligns with the expectations and desires of the community.
The Framework includes a Pinjarra District Structure Plan (DSP), a Pinjarra Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) and an amendment to Local Planning Scheme No. 4 (LPS4); delivering a contemporary guide for future zoning, subdivision and development of Pinjarra.
The Framework details a range of planning-related priorities. It outlines diverse housing options, where new facilities such as schools, services and recreational spaces will be located, the potential for a new high frequency Pinjarra to Mandurah Transit System, and the protection of environmental attributes.
“We are envisioning charming neighbourhoods connected through green open spaces, a vibrant town centre, pedestrian-friendly streets, convenient public-transport and well-considered traffic networks getting people from A to B,” added President McLarty.
“Imagine the daily needs of community met with services such as schools, sports facilities, shopping centres and so on, all within walkable distances.
“It’s an exciting time for Pinjarra, and we are thrilled that the community expectations align with the Shire’s vision,” said President McLarty.
The Pinjarra Planning Framework will now go to the Western Australian Planning Commission for endorsement.
