The Murray community gathered at Edenvale Homestead on Australia Day to enjoy the annual Lion’s Club of Pinjarra breakfast, celebrate the winners and nominees of the Community Citizen of the Year Awards and to welcome eighteen new Australian citizens to Murray.

Shire President, David Bolt said the Shire always receives an outstanding calibre of nominees for the Australia Day Community Citizen of the Year Awards and the 2024 awards were no exception.

“The awards celebrate many citizens and groups who go above and beyond in serving our district”, Shire President Bolt said.

“This year we received twelve nominations across three award categories of Community Citizen of the Year, Community Group of the Year and Senior Community Citizen of the Year. Each of them helps make Murray an outstanding place for community, lifestyle and opportunity.”

Peta Sattler was named the Community Citizen of the Year in recognition of her efforts in establishing the Bush Fire Cadet program in Coolup.

Peta saw the positive impact that engaged youth can generate within a community. By having the Cadet program established, the children in the area are able to belong to a group and be a part of something that they are proud of.

Since 2016, Peta has led eight Cadets to successfully transfer into active fire fighters. She encourages and facilitates the Cadets to volunteer at multiple community events throughout the district annually.

The Senior Community Citizen of the Year award was presented to Linda Gregory. Linda is the secretary of the North Yunderup Community Association, working tirelessly to keep the community of North Yunderup connected, including organising community events. She has also achieved major improvements of the local hall, and helps the community with conservation works in the local wetlands.

The Community Group of the Year award was presented to the Lions Club of Pinjarra (Inc). They have been involved with many community events over the years including the Australia Day Celebrations, Pinjarra Festival, Pinjarra Garden Day, Christmas events and more. The Lions Club also support all local schools and have an active role in recycling projects.

“On behalf of Council, I’d like to acknowledge and thank all nominees for their contributions to Murray,” added Shire President Bolt.
