What is illegal dumping?

Illegal dumping is a form of littering that involves waste that is transported and dumped using a motor vehicle or has likely involved the use of a motor vehicle to get to the location. It can occur on both private and public land and generally involves waste of a reasonable size, in other words, more than a couple of bags.

What constitutes littering?

Litter is considered any item left where it’s not meant to be, including:

  • Incorrectly discarding rubbish in a public place
  • Dumping rubbish in reserves or vacant land
  • Depositing domestic or commercial waste in a public bin
  • Items escaping from an unsecured load
  • Posting publicity material (bill posting) in a public place or on a vehicle without the permission of the owner
  • Abandoning shopping trolleys
  • Cigarette butt disposal
