Registering Your Dog

Microchipping

All dogs over the age of 3 months must be microchipped and registered with the respective local government.

Your vet can assist with microchipping or provide an exemption if applicable. We will assist with the registration.

Please note that if you registering a dangerous/restricted breed, the dog must also be sterilised. A sterilisation certificate must be provided when registering your dog.

Dog Registration Form

In most cases dog registrations can be obtained for a 1 year, 3 years or a lifetime period. Dangerous dogs can only be registered 1 year at a time.

You must be over the age of 18 to register a dog.

Please complete and submit one form per dog.

Prepare Supporting Documents/Information

  • Proof of microchipping (obtained from your vet) is required when registering your dog.
  • If your dog is sterilised, please provide the sterilisation certificate (obtained from your vet).
  • If a veterinarian has granted exemption, please ensure you have proof of the exemption.
  • If you are applying for a pensioner concession, please have your pensioner concession card.

Visit the Shire of Murray Administration Office

Bring along your:

  • Completed registration form
  • Microchip and sterilisation certificates and/or proof of exemption
  • Proof of pensioner concession
  • Payment

Our customer service officers will enter your details into our system and issue your pet’s registration tag.

  • Proof of microchipping (obtained from your vet)
  • If your dog is sterilised, sterislisation certificate (obtained from your vet) - certificate is required when registering a dangerous dog
  • If a veterinarian has granted exemption, please ensure you have proof of the exemption
  • If applying for a pensioner concession, you pensioner concession card

  • Proof of microchip and serialisation, proof of exemption, proof of pensioner concession card

Adopting a Registered Dog

Dog registrations are interchangeable across the state. To transfer your registration please complete our registration form.

You will need to provide proof of registration by advising the name of the local government at which the dog is currently registered as well as its existing registration tag number.

If your dog is already registered with the Shire of Murray, please complete our change of details form.

You can either email, post or bring the completed form into our Administration Office for processing.

No additional fees apply.

Remember, you will also need to update the details associated with your pet’s microchip. Contact your vet or the respective registry.  A microchip is only as useful as its contact details!

Moving to Murray with an Already Registered Dog?

Dog registrations are interchangeable across the state. To transfer your registration please complete our registration form(PDF, 238KB) and return the form to us by mail, email or in person. No additional fees apply.

Remember to alert the other local government in writing of your change of details and to update the details associated with your pet’s microchip by contacting your vet or the respective registry.

How Many Dogs Can I Keep?

You can keep two dogs over the age of three months and the young of these dogs up to three months old.

If your property is greater than ten hectares and situated outside a townsite, you can keep four dogs over the age of three months and the young of those dogs up to the age of three months.

If you would like to keep more dogs but less than six, you will need to complete the following form - Exemption Application to keep more than the Prescribed Number of Dogs.

Application Fee: $150. This form can be returned in person or by post.

  • If applying in person cash, card, cheques and money orders are accepted.
  • If applying by post cheques and money orders are accepted.

If you intend to keep six or more dogs on your property you will need to obtain a kennel establishment licence and planning approval. Health and building approvals may also be required.

Can’t Attain a Sterilisation Certificate?

Please provide a statutory declaration in lieu of the required certificate.

Over the Phone Payments

Over the phone payments are not accepted.

Microchipping vs. Registration

Microchips issued by vets are separate to the registration tags issued by us. This means that dogs have to be microchipped (your vet will be able to assist with this process) and registered with us following the process specified above.
