Keeping and Caring for Your Dogs
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the welfare and actions of your canine companion.
Below are a few tips to keep your furry family members and other people and dogs safe:
- Microchip and register your dog by the age of three months old
- When in public ensure your dog is wearing a collar with its registration tag attached
- Train and exercise your dog
- Take your dog to the vet for regular check-ups and seek vet assistance if your dog is injured or unwell
- Keep your property clean by ensuring it is free from excrement, filth, food waste and other matter which is likely to become a health hazard and/or attract rats or other vermin and vectors of disease including flies
- When in public and if not in an approved off-leash exercise area, keep your dog on a lead and ensure that the person holding the dog is capable of controlling the dog
- When in an approved off-leash area, a dog should be accompanied by a competent person capable of controlling the dog, who is liable for the control of the dog, is carrying a lead and is capable of attaching the lead to the dog
- Ensure your dog is securely and comfortably confined within the premises where he/she is kept
- Never allow your dog to wander unsupervised, there are numerous risks including being fatally injured, poisoned or impounded for attacking people or livestock, snake bites, exposure to disease and traffic incidents to name a few
- When out in public, pick up your dog’s deposits and dispose of your collection in the bins provided (failing to remove the matter is an offence and let’s face it rather offensive)
