Historical Background

About This Location

The Shire of Murray is the ancestral home of the Binjareb people, an indigenous Australian group of Noongar speakers. Their name is taken from the word “pinjar” or “benjas” meaning “wetlands” or “swamps”. The area is also one of the earliest settled locations in WA and boasts a fine collection of buildings constructed by the early pioneers in the 1800’s.
