A Note on Some of the Common Sources of Noise Pollution

Loud music, parties and musical instruments

If noise emitted from a property is audible inside the receiving property when the windows and doors are closed, it is unlikely to comply with noise regulations.

Noise from stereos, radios and televisions must meet the assigned noise levels at all times.

It’s always advisable to notify neighbours if hosting a party as well as the time that the music will be turned off. It is also advisable to provide a contact number and name that one could call if the music becomes too loud.

Musical instruments

Noise regulations allow the playing of musical instruments in a reasonable manner for up to an hour in any day, at the following times:

  • Between 7:00am and 7:00pm Monday to Saturday
  • Between 9:00am and 7:00pm Sundays and public holidays

Power tools, lawn mowers and other specified equipment

Specified equipment is defined in the regulations as any equipment which requires the constant presence of an operator for normal use.

Specified equipment may be used for two hours per day at the following times:

  • Between 7:00am and 7:00pm Monday to Saturday
  • Between 9:00am to 7:00pm on a Sunday or public holiday
