It might be time for a staycation because Pinjarra is clearly the place to be, recently being announced as a finalist in the 2021 GWN7 Top Tourism Town Awards.

The annual Top Tourism Town Awards recognise some of Western Australia’s best destinations, encouraging travellers to hit the road and see more of their own backyard.

For the first time the historic heritage town of Pinjarra has been recognised as a tourist town in its own right and named a finalist in the 2021 Awards, alongside 16 other towns including Exmouth, Busselton and Kalbarri. Nearby Dwellingup has also been announced a finalist in the Top Small Tourism Town Award Category.

Shire of Murray Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Dean Unsworth said Pinjarra and its surrounds have used the interstate tourism downturn of the past year to enhance their offerings, as well as their tourism positioning and has re-emerged as a stronger destination.

“The vibrant town of Pinjarra is the gateway to an adventure filled aquatic playground; an invitation to experience life on the Murray River,” said Mr Unsworth.

“Only an hour’s drive from Perth, Pinjarra and its surrounding areas are a melting pot of culture, great cafes, quirky shopfronts and lively events, all flowing with Pinjarra’s authentic historic and country charm.”

While it may be known as one of WA’s oldest towns with a rich history, Pinjarra is not only a place you can relax and unwind, it offers a mecca for river adventures, creative culture, festivals and endless experiences to delight all the senses.

“Pinjarra really is a standout destination and its elements of nature, a welcoming community and the cultural experiences of the Murray region brings real connection with our visitors,” said Mr Unsworth.

“The essence of this thriving destination reflects the heritage, the creative communities, the natural environment and the Murray River as the wild heart of the region.”

Wander through vibrant art exhibitions, creative works and seek out hidden galleries, before attending the country festivals, racing events and embracing the town’s quirky cultural attractions. Match the gentle pace of the river’s flow by exploring the region’s heritage trail and soak in the scenic natural beauty that surrounds.

“As a finalist in this year’s Top Tourism Town Awards, we hope to motivate Australians to discover a new corner of their own country, just an hour south of Perth” said Mr Unsworth.

“The local industry and community are so proud that Pinjarra and its surrounds have been recognised as one of WA’s most loved places to visit.”

Public online voting is now open until the 8th April 2021. Voters will be asked to describe why they love Pinjarra, and will go into a draw to win a $5,000 WA Travel Voucher. It takes less than a minute to cast your vote online via

For the first time in the award’s history, the winning destinations will go into a national competition, competing against the winners from other states to be titled Australia’s Top Tourism Town and Small Tourism Town.

The WA winners will be announced at the 2021 Perth Airport WA Regional Tourism Conference Dinner in Geraldton on Tuesday, May 4, 2021.
