Street Trees

Overview

We are responsible for controlling the development of street verges and the provision and maintenance of street trees.

Street trees are planted to create a balanced avenue effect and to add to the streetscape aesthetics, including providing shade for pedestrians.

Street Tree Selection

Street tree selection is determined by a site's physical constraints, including:

  • Verge width
  • Building set backs
  • Overhead power lines
  • Pedestrian and vehicular movement
  • Underground services
  • Public safety

Request a Street Tree

Each winter we provide and plant street trees on verges.

Tree species are determined by the Shire, with particular species allocated to individual streets. View our Street Tree Species List(PDF, 156KB).

Applications received before 30 April will generally be processed for the upcoming winter, tree supply permitting. Applications received after 30 April will be processed for planting the following winter (next calendar year).

A few things to note

  • Generally, one tree is planted per verge. However, for large verges, additional trees may be planted. Please indicate under the additional information section of the application if this applies to your request.
  • Due to budget limitations, only a certain number of trees can be planted in any one year. Requests will be processed in order of receipt.
  • Street tree planting will be carried out in winter when there is rain, including planting, staking and fertilising.
  • You are responsible for watering your street tree/s through the summer months.

Street Tree Removal

Street trees are valuable assets and should only be removed as a last resort.

Street trees will not be removed for any of the following reasons:

  • Leaf, flower, nut, twig and generally naturally occurring litter
  • To establish or enhance views
  • Personal species preferences
  • To enable additional sunlight for solar panels

Requests for street tree removal are forwarded to our Director Infrastructure Services for consideration.

Street Tree Pruning

Pruning is undertaken:

  • To maintain and improve the condition of street trees and to prolong their healthy life span
  • When power lines abut
  • For pedestrian or traffic safety
  • To remove branches overhanging private property

Professional maintenance by contractors who have training in arboricultural techniques undertake all street tree pruning. Trees will not be pruned to prevent shading of solar panels.

Do you believe the street tree adjacent to your property requires pruning?
