Water Transport Facilities

The Shire of Murray has included the following projects in the 2005/06 budget:

 1.       Dredging and Remediation Management Plan for the Yunderup Entrance Channel

The Shire has employed dredging and environmental consultants to assist in the formulation of this plan. The management plan for the Entrance Channel requires Department of Environment and Department of Planning and Infrastructure approvals before any further dredging can be undertaken.  The final plan will also include the preferred remediation method of the existing dredge spoil site situated at Goongoolup Island, South Yunderup.

2.        Reinstate Canal Ends

Located at the dead ends of original Yunderup canals are concrete housings that were installed when the canals were originally built.  These are situated between Tanderra Place, Woolah Place and Oomoo Place.  They were installed as a maintenance measure to flush out the canal ends at times when water quality dropped below a certain standard.  These pumphouses have never been used and the infrastructure has deteriorated to such a standard that any pumping would be done by other means (ie portable submersible pumps). Therefore, Council will be removing these unsightly concrete tanks and tidying up the ends of these canals to produce a more aesthetically pleasing environment.

3.        Feasibility Study for New Boatramp at Ravenswood

The Department of Planning and Infrastructure and Shire of Murray are jointly funding this feasibility study.  It will focus around the Public Open Space situated south of the Ravenswood Caravan Park and will take into account future growth of the area along with the impending Kwinana Highway extension.

 4.        Public Jetty – Strain Glen South Yunderup

The Department of Planning and Infrastructure and Shire of Murray are jointly funding this project.  The jetty will be for the general public boating traffic and will be limited to short stay only.  It will link in with the public bbq’s, picnic areas, playgrounds and toilet facilities located in Centenary Park.  Surveys will be undertaken shortly.  Once designs are complete, approvals are required through various government agencies and then construction will commence later in the financial year.

 5.        Public Boatramp, Jetty and Swim Beach Maintenance

As per previous years funds have been set aside for the general maintenance of these facilities as identified throughout the year.

 6.        Biannnual Hydrographic Surveys of Canals

Council will be organising licenced surveyors to undertake hydrographic surveys of the Willow Gardens and Yunderup Canal systems.
