Dog Control & Fines

Dog Control

If you have a dog you must ensure that the fences and gates at the property where the dog is kept are sufficient to prevent the dog from getting out.

Rangers can seize and impound dogs found in public places and not held on a leash.

You will have to pay to get your dog out of the pound. The Shire Dog Pound is located in Baker Street, Pinjarra and dogs can only be claimed by prior arrangement.

Dog Leashes

Dogs must be kept on a leash (not longer than 2 metres) in all public places. Whilst walking your dog on a leash you must be capable of controlling it, should for example, the dog attempt to run off or fight another dog.

Even in 'prescribed exercise areas' where dogs may be left off leashes, the dog must be under your 'effective control'. This means you must have the leash with you and be able to restrain the dog and put the leash back on if necessary.

Dogs General

If your dog is given away, dies or is sold you must notify Council with details.

You must pick up any excrement from your dog that is in a public place. Local Laws allow Council to take action against the owners of dogs that allow them to excrete on public places. Unless the owner of the land permits the 'deposit', the excreta must be picked up and disposed of.

Nuisance

A dog can be taken to be a nuisance if it persistently barks, constantly wanders or is dangerous to the health of someone. Anyone may complain that your dog is a nuisance and forms are available from Council.
