Environmental Health
The Main aim of the Health Services Section is to deliver its service in accordance with legislation, community needs and expectations in a progressive and efficient manner, in the anticipation that pubic health will be preserved and improved.
The following programmes are a major part of the Health Services functions:
Food
- Food premises inspections - hygiene checks and food handling practices (currently introduction Food Safe Handling Programme)
- Food sampling - for compliance to the Food Standards Code.
- Licencing of Itinerant Food Vendors.
Disease Control
- Investigate cases of notifiable infectious disease and provide advice.
Wastewater Management
- Approve and inspect effluent disposal systems, including alternative treatment units.
- Provide advice on policy for reducing nutrient export from wastewater systems.
Water Quality Surveillance
- Routinely check and take samples of public swimming pool water.
- Routinely monitor bacteria levels in the Murray River
- Liaise with the Water & Rivers Commission when toxic algal blooms occur.
Accommodation
- Routinely check Caravan Parks and other holiday accommodation.
Public Buildings
- Routinely check public buildings ensuring that "Exit" signs, exits and facilities are in compliance with the legislation.
Vector and pest Control
- Provide advice on vector and pest control.
- Manage Council's Mosquito Minimisation Programme.
Health Promotion
- At every opportunity promote community health, eg. workshops, schools, etc.
Aboriginal Environmental Health
- Provide advice as required.
Offensive Trades
- Routinely inspect and licence Offensive Trades (piggeries, poultry farms etc.)
Mosquito Minimization
- The Shire's major Health Program each year is Mosquito Minimisation.
