Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo
(Calyptorhynchus banksii)
The male cockatoo with its prominent crest above their strong bills, are black with a crimson band on their tail feathers. The females are brownish-black with yellow speckles and light yellow to orange tail bands. They range between 50-61 cm long.
Nesting season for the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo is between March and April and July to October. They lay one, sometimes two eggs, though regardless of the number of eggs only one chick is reared.
The Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo’s require monitoring and are on a reserve list of species. Their nest are popular with wildlife traffickers and due to clearing of their habitat their numbers have been considerably reduced.
