Minister for Local Government, John Castrili made the trip to Murray during the week to declare Shire President Noel Nancarrow Freeman of the Shire of Murray, joining his late father, the only other Councillor to receive Freeman status.
Council made the decision behind closed doors in May this year in recognition of Cr Nancarrow’s service to the community, in the lead up to his retirement after 23 years, 19 at the helm.
Chief Executive Officer Dean Unsworth said it was great to have Minister Castrilli attend the Council especially for Cr Nancarrow’s presentation.
“Twenty three years is a fantastic effort in serving the community, with Cr Nancarrow achieving many goals during his time on Council including the establishment of a Recreation Centre and aquatic facilities within the Shire,” Mr Unsworth said.
Minister Castrilli described Cr Nancarrow as a man loyal to his community and passionate about the issues which affect them.
“On behalf of Shire Councillors and staff, may I extend our gratitude to Cr Nancarrow for his service.”
“He has been able to guide the Council to achieve many positive outcomes, with the crowning glory being the opening of the Murray Aquatic Centre in April after twenty years of lobbying for funding.”
“This will be one of his great legacies,” Mr Unsworth said.
Cr Nancarrow joined the Shire in 1988 as a Councillor, and was elected Shire President four years later.
