Lifelong learning, the magic of books and reading aloud were all lessons shared with parents, kindy and pre-primary children from Carcoola and Dwellingup Primary Schools recently as Murray Library played host to the Better Beginning program.
Manager Library Services Leigh Angilley said parents can significantly help with the education of their child through regular reading sessions and learning activities.
“Parents play an important role as a child’s first teacher, and reading aloud helps to develop literacy skills, and a lifelong love of books,” Ms Angilley said.
Thanks to the State Government’s Better Beginnings program, Library staff met with local parents to talk about reading with their child and presented a gift book for each child to enjoy. In addition, teachers from Carcoola and Dwellingup Primary Schools received a set of ten books to use in their classroom during the year.
Murray Library has a number of Better Beginnings Discovery Backpacks available to borrow for four and five year olds, with the Shire of Murray website offering a number of fun, interactive education resources for parents and children to enjoy.
“We are always keen to improve our service, so if parents would like to see anything in particular at Murray Library for their children, please don’t hesitate to chat with one of our Library staff members,” Ms Angilley said.
The Library plans to work with other primary schools across Murray over the coming year.
Murray Library is located on the corner of Pinjarra and Forrest Roads, and is open Monday to Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 5pm, Thursday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 9am to 1.30pm.
