Murray Celebrates A Sunny Australia Day

Hundreds gathered for a sunny Australia Day at the Edenvale complex, which began with a flag raising ceremony and the national anthem, followed by a BBQ breakfast prepared by the event hosts, the Lions Club of Pinjarra.
The crowd was entertained by Lionel Morris, with Shire President Wally Barrett presenting Premiers Awards to community members and groups who have made an outstanding contribution during the year.
The Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for a Person of 25 Years or Over was awarded to Derk Luiten for environmental enhancements to the Ravenswood community. The award for a citizen 25 years and under was awarded to Morgan Biggs for his contribution to the sporting community, with the North Dandalup Primary School receiving the Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Award for community group or event for delivering an environmental initiative which has seen the planting of 25,000 trees and shrubs throughout the locality over
14 years.
Shire President Wally Barrett said a highlight of the day was welcoming new citizens to the country during theAustraliaday citizenship ceremony.
“Audience members on the day reaffirmed their loyalty toAustralia, whilst three members of theMurraycommunity became citizens of this great nation,” Cr Barrett said.
Representatives from the Pinjarra Branch of Bendigo Bank were in attendance with their mascot Pig E greeting local children.
The event marked the first for the Pinjarra Visitor Centre’s, now settled in its new Edenvale location.
“Pinjarra Visitor Centre has reported a positive response to the relocation in their first week at Edenvale, with submissions for Edenvale tearooms recently closing, and details of the new lessee to be announced over the next few months,” Cr Barrett said.
