Hoon drivers, off road vehicles and graffiti are just three of the priority crime and safety issues identified in Murray’s Community Safety Crime Prevention Strategic Partnership Plan which will guide the Shire on matters of crime and safety through to 2015.
Council’s plan, currently available for public comment, has been developed in consultation with the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Strategic Partnership group comprising of key representatives from the community, Police, Mandurah’s School Drug Education and Road Aware office, local schools and youth services.
Shire President Noel Nancarrow said Council is committed to improving the community and its services, with this particular plan a vital step in ensuring crime prevention, now and in the future.
“The draft plan has been the subject of extensive consultation, including community workshops with local residents and discussion with key players of the community safety and crime prevention industry; and it is now imperative for local residents to have their say prior to the document being finalised,” Cr Nancarrow said.
Some of the plan’s strategies include preparing Murray’s young people to be better drivers, tackling school truancy in the area, boosting Neighbourhood Watch initiatives and encouraging community art projects to foster community ownership and pride in public places throughout the Shire.
“Initiatives within the plan not only include common sense solutions such as community education on significant crime and safety issues, but also more creative methods such as including youth in local planning decisions to encourage their pride in Murray,” Cr Nancarrow said.
A copy of the draft plan is available for download here.
