In a proactive approach to environmental responsibility, the Shire of Murray will proceed with the development of a Local Biodiversity Strategy following a Council decision this week.
The proposed Biodiversity Strategy will provide a scientific platform to guide the Shire’s decision making processes integrating biodiversity protection whenever possible.
Shire President Wally Barrett said Council plans to increase its focus on environmental management over the next decade through its recently endorsed Strategic Community Plan.
“The development of a Biodiversity Strategy will lead to more sustainable development outcomes, and an improved understanding of biodiversity requirements for future growth areas,” Cr Barrett said.
A recent report to the Planning and Development Services Committee calls for the establishment of a working group to help inform the preparation of the Strategy, and represented by Council, and other stakeholders including the State Government’s planning and environmental agencies, and local environmental organisations.
“We recognise the development of the Biodiversity Strategy will need to be a comprehensive process, and require a widespread consultation program and input from a number of agencies,”
Cr Barrett said.
