An informal ceremony was held last week to launch new community facilities within the Edenvale Complex, following the devastating fire of November 2009 which significantly damaged the rear of the building.
Partly funded by a $192,000 Lotterywest contribution, community groups in the area will now have access to a meeting room and resources, complemented by toilet facilities, office and storage space.
Shire President Noel Nancarrow said when the fire damaged Edenvale in 2009, Council was disappointed to see the rear of the building crumble, but decided to turn a negative into a positive.
“At the time, we were aware our growing number of community groups lacked community meeting places, with many groups and clubs forced to gather within residential homes.”
“It has been great to rebuild the damaged portion of Edenvale to incorporate much-needed facilities for our local groups, whilst staying true to the heritage of the building, which remains one of the Shire’s greatest attractions,” Cr Nancarrow said.
The refurbished portion of the Complex has been completed by Clinton Long Project Management, who specialise in restoring historical buildings.
“We have left some of the fire damaged walls exposed, as we believe it tells a story of Edenvale for future generations. Whilst we have delivered modern facilities within its interior, we have worked with Clinton Long to ensure the essence of Edenvale remains,” Cr Nancarrow said.
The community facilities will be available outside Edenvale’s operating hours, and can be booked through the Shire of Murray's online booking facility here. Or by telephoning the Shire on 9531 7777.
