Fencing, Weed and Access Control in Priority Shire of Murray Reserves
Some of the Shire’s most significant reserves have been the focus of revegetation works controlling the spread of invasive weeds and preventing the establishment of new weed populations following $16,500 in funding from the State’s natural Resource Management Office (State NRM) during the 2010/2011 funding round, with the Shire of Murray committing more than $5,000 towards the project.
Intensive weed control and revegetation was complemented by rejuvenation works undertaken through other projects, Reserves reaping the rewards of this project include Blake Road and the Gun Club Reserve in Coolup, Herron Point Reserve (co-funded by Coastwest), Culeenup Island and the Pinjarra Light Industrial Estate Reserve (both co-funded by the Southwest Catchments Council) and Jennie Place in North Dandalup (co-funded by the Department of Environment and Conservation), just to name a few.
The Shire acknowledges the State NRM Office which is administered by the Department of Agriculture and Food for its significant contribution to protect and enhance biodiversity in the Shire of Murray and the Peel Region.

What are the projects undertaken by the Shire?
A variety of environmental projects have been initiated by the Shire of Murray and the Shire is working together with a range of organisations and individuals to achieve a better outcome for the environment. These projects include extensive revegetation efforts in various reserves, such as Coolenup Island, Herron Point and the Pinjarra Light Industrial Area Reserve. The Shire of Murray acknowledges all funding bodies for their support and sincerely thanks all volunteers and organisations for supporting the projects and making a difference for the benefit of the environment.

Another project finalised is a stormwater retrofit bioretention basin at Banksia Terrace (corner Delta Drive) in South Yunderup. While previously stormwater entered the Murray River via a pipe in this location, a retention basin has been constructed to reduce the influx of nutrients and pollutants into the river. The project was funded by the Western Australian State Government Natural Resource Management Office through the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council and the Department of Water as part of the ‘Filtering the Nutrient Storm’ initiative.
