Pinjarra Senior High School student Nicholas Wilson has attributed a sail on the Leeuwin II Ocean Adventure for his new found confidence.
The recipient of a scholarship through the Shire of Murray’s Youth Advisory Council and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Community Investment Program, Nicholas was selected for the trip by his school based on his leadership potential.
Nicholas said he enjoyed the trip and learnt to hang out with people who were of different personality types than his usual group of friends.
“I learnt how to communicate with new people through team building activities, and I met kids from various backgrounds across Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Victoria,” Nicholas said.
Shire President Wally Barrett said Council is keen to increase their focus on younger residents of Murray, and the scholarship program through the Youth Advisory Council has been a fantastic achievement during the year.
“Our young people are the future leaders of this community. Offering scholarships for leadership programs on the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure provides young men such as Nicholas important life skills for his future,” Cr Barrett said.
Leeuwin Ocean Adventure trips offer life skills, development in decision making, communication, teamwork, leadership and self awareness.
Nicholas acknowledged the Shire of Murray for the opportunity and encouraged other young people to take the challenge should it arise.
“The program is well organised, and I learnt how to get through anything with a positive attitude,” Nicholas said.
