Properties not connected to deep sewerage require onsite waste water treatment systems. Low lying areas within the Shire include sensitive environments with high ground water levels, and therefore only nutrient retentive systems are approved in these localities. The Shire aims to improve environmental standards by reducing the release of phosphates into waterways, as it promotes algal growth.
Please note that only ATUs that are capable of removing phosphorus will be approved for environmentally sensitive areas. Standard septic systems will be considered for properties at higher elevations, where there is a greater depth to ground water.
Prior to installation of a waste water treatment system the following needs to be completed:
- An Application submitted with the relevant fee (see Schedule of Fees)
- Application approved by Environmental Health Services
- Two sets of detailed plans (1:100 or 1:200 scales only) indicating the location of the system
- Details of the licensed plumber who will install the system
Once your system is installed, contact Environmental Health Services so an officer may inspect the septic system prior to the issue of a Permit to Use.
