NEW REGIONAL HERITAGE ADVISER FOR PEEL

27-May-2008
The important cultural heritage of the Peel region will be in the spotlight after the appointment of a new Regional Heritage Adviser, Giselle Harris. Giselle completed a Masters in Cultural Heritage Management at Curtin University, specialising in heritage management in regional Western Australia.

Giselle said over the past year and a half she has been working with Aboriginal communities to preserve their heritage in the resource-rich areas of the Murchison-Gascoyne and Pilbara.

"The conservation and appreciation of heritage can have an integrating effect on communities facing an influx of development,” Giselle said.

“I look forward to working with the community and the Shire of Murray to ensure that valued heritage is identified and preserved alongside new developments proposed for the region.”

The Heritage Council of WA’s Manager of Conservation and Assessment Stephen Carrick said the Regional Heritage Advisory service aims to help conserve and celebrate cultural heritage across our State.

“Regional Heritage Advisers offer communities advice on heritage assessments; conservation planning and promotion; funding applications; development issues and more. They also help local governments review local heritage inventories,” Mr Carrick said.

“In addition to the Peel service, Regional Heritage Advisers currently operate in the Mid West, Goldfields, South West, Great Southern, Wheatbelt, Avon Arc and Subiaco/ Cottesloe regions.   The Heritage Council aims to expand this service in coming years.”
